There’s been a real mix up in commercial radio in 2014 with
some big talent stepping down from their thrones. From long running teams like
Matt and Jo on Fox FM to Hughesy and Kate from Nova’s breakfast time slot,
leaving the door wide open for fresh talent to move up the ranks and take their
places.
Dan
Debuf and Maz Compton have become the new drive team for the Today Network with
anchor Michael Christian (MC). The change up sees the pair move their
nationally broadcast two-hour 6pm show to the ever important drive time slot
with Christian, who previously hosted the Hot 30 Countdown. The Drive show,
previously hosted in 2013 by Fifi Box and Jules Lund grabs the attention of
large numbers of listeners whilst they drive home, an important and competitive
time slot for any radio station which comes with it some added pressures.
The
Today Network has made a few mistakes over the years with hit and misses in
terms of their on air talent, but this transition may be a smart move on their
behalf taking an already well-known duo with a long running history together
and great on air chemistry. Dan and Maz seem to really know how to bounce their
comedic talents off of each other whilst anchor Christian has been keeping the young
team grounded making for a smooth, tight running show.
The
only hurdles they’ve seemed to of faced has been interacting more one on one
with the listeners on air, something that their previous shows didn’t have much
of. But Dan’s tall and I hear Maz although short in stature knows how to jump
so those hurdles shouldn’t be a problem. With a mixture of top 40 music, good
comedy and clearly a good match-up, the drive show with Dan and Maz seems to
have all the ingredients to have a
successful and well oiled show.
The real question is, has Dan and Maz managed to fill the
empty shoes left by their predecessors Fifi
Box and Jules Lund? Well luckily
for Dan and Maz, when in the same room, Jules didn’t wear shoes and Fifi has
small feet.
2014 is definitely going to divide the boys from the men and
it’ll be interesting to see which stations and shows will shine come ratings week.
